The essence of encaustic art
Encaustic art, an ancient technique dating back to the Greeks, involves painting with heated beeswax mixed with damar resin and coloured pigments. The word "encaustic" itself means "to heat or burn in," referring to the process of fusing each layer of wax with heat. We would love to explain its rich history and the beautiful evolution of this unique art form. Come learn about the materials and tools involved, from pure beeswax and damar resin to specialized heated palettes and brushes, and discover how these elements come together to create stunning, durable artworks.

My distinctive approach
My artistic journey often begins with original photographs. These images are carefully transferred onto the waxed surface, forming the foundation of my pieces. I then embellish these transfers with a variety of textures and other art media, such as pastels, inks, and neo colour crayons, adding depth and narrative. Sometimes, my work incorporates building layers using collage components, creating intricate surfaces that invite closer inspection. My art reflects the things that bring me pleasure, stories of the past and present, and the people and things that occupy my thoughts, making each piece a unique expression.

The sensory joy of encaustic
Beyond its visual appeal, working with encaustic media is a truly immersive experience. The warm, sweet smell of beeswax fills the studio, creating an inviting atmosphere. The medium itself offers incredible versatility, allowing for surfaces that can be both incredibly smooth and highly textured, providing a tactile dimension to the artwork. This interplay of sight, smell, and touch is what makes encaustic art so captivating for both the creator and the admirer. I believe every art lover and student should experience the unique qualities of this ancient and modern medium.
